How will my Yurt Cabin be installed?

In general, installing a Yurt Cabin can be accomplished by anyone with a bit of DIY experience. Because of the Yurt Cabin’s built in leveling system which eliminates the need for a platform, it can be installed from start to finish in 2-3 days! In some cases, folks will hire a contractor to set up their Yurt Cabin which is certainly a viable option. Each Yurt Cabin order will include a full assembly manual with detailed instructions. Consider inviting friends and family to join you in assembling your Yurt Cabin and make its construction into a communal experience!

How long is a Yurt Cabin expected to last?

Freedom Yurt Cabins are constructed in a similar manner to a stick frame house. Each component of a Yurt Cabin is expected to last indefinitely. Of course, each Yurt Cabin should also be maintained like a home. The walls should be painted every 10-15 years and the DuroLast® Vinyl topcover should be changed sometime after its 15-year warranty expires. Also, the LP SmartSide® structural panels, used on the wall pieces, are an engineered product with an expected lifetime of 50+ years. Please consult a member of our staff to ask about special environmental conditions that may affect the longevity of your Yurt Cabin.

Will my Yurt require a building permit? Can it be used as a permanent residence in my location?

Building code requirements can vary greatly from state to state and even within different municipalities. It’s best to check with your local building department before purchasing a Yurt Cabin. We will happily provide a set of plans so that a building inspector can see how our Yurt Cabins are constructed. As most building departments may only have experience with fabric sided Yurts, be sure to emphasize that Yurt Cabins are built to the same specifications as a stick frame house and can certainly be left in place as a permanent structure for the duration of their use.

Yurts are typically built on a foundation, but your Yurt Cabin is not. Does this mean that Yurt Cabins are portable?

Yes! Because of the innovative foundation system of leveling feet built into every Yurt Cabin, these structures can be assembled with only minimal foundation preparation. This not only saves you time, but saves you from having to build your own platform or paying a contractor to do it. We suggest stacking concrete blocks or pavers to a level height below where the feet of your Yurt Cabin will sit. Once your Yurt Cabin’s joists are set on these blocks, each will be leveled individually and the joists will be anchored to the ground using innovative Duck Bill Earth Anchors. Our system gives you the ability to move your Yurt Cabin with next to no footprint left behind. If you are required to set your Yurt Cabin on a concrete slab, we can provide you with different anchoring hardware to suit the specific needs of your project.

Can I run electricity and plumbing into my Yurt?

Yes, wires and pipes from existing sources can easily be run from below the Yurt Cabin through the bottom of the floor. Outlets can be installed either in the floor or in the walls of your Yurt Cabin. We recommend routing plumbing and electrical up into an interior wall, because the outer walls are filled with insulation.

Can I build walls or a loft inside of my Yurt Cabin?

Yes. Walls and lofts can be framed up in a Yurt Cabin just as they would be in a traditional house. Building a loft will maximize the usable space in your Yurt Cabin and can easily create a spacious sleeping or storage area. We also recommend routing electrical and plumbing up into an interior wall.

What is the best way to heat and cool my Yurt Cabin?

Customers with Yurt Cabins in colder environments usually install wood stoves in their Yurt Cabins and vent the exhaust through a wall. Venting through the roof of a Yurt Cabin would void the 15 year warranty on the Durolast Vinyl Membrane which covers the structure. To cool Yurt Cabins, customers install window or wall mounted, electrical A/C units. Also, the windows and dome in a Yurt Cabin are designed to maximize airflow for those days when the weather outside is just right. Add a fan mount ($50) to recirculate warm air in the winter, or vent hot air up and out of the dome in the summer.

The Yurt Cabin has a light environmental footprint. It doesn’t need cement footings like most yurt installations. It can be set up on concrete stepping stones and secured using special Duckbill earth anchors. Later, it can be removed and relocated with minimal impact.

The 16-Wall Yurt Cabin model can easily accommodate a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living area. See an example floor plan in the “Floor Plans” tab. Looking for a bit more space for full-time living? Consider upgrading to the 18-Wall Yurt Cabin.
